At Vidaviva we want to share with our followers different organic farming techniques that we already apply on our farms. These are simple ideas that you can also apply to your orchards and crops. In this case, although we are talking specifically about olive trees, it can be applied to other types of crops.
Build your own traps for olive flies. We explain how to build them, variations and recommendations that you can apply to your crops.
- Make a few holes (4 or 5 is enough), less than 6 millimeters in the crown of a transparent plastic bottle, to be able to observe the trapped flies and the quantity of liquid present to replenish the liquid when it evaporates. The size cannot be larger than this to avoid insects that are beneficial, such as bees, falling in.
- Place a strip of yellow electrical tape or yellow paint (a color that attracts flies).
- Fill the bottle with about 10-15cm of liquid composed of a mixture made with 1 litre of water and 40 grams of Diammonium Phosphate. If it is not available, dissolve 2 tablespoons of sugar and a good splash of vinegar in a little water (this liquid will work as an attractant for the fly).
- Hang a bottle from each tree (try using wire or some strong string) about 1.5 meters from the ground and facing southwest of the tree.
NOTE : These traps also work for other types of annoying insects, you can place them near compost bins or on other fruit trees, or even on tomato plants. Save and share!
